Cherubini: Requiem + Haydn, Mozart, Sibelius…. ‘Music from the Age of Reason’

Conducted by Richard Cock. This will be a concert containing music by the great masters from the Age of Reason. The Requiem in C minor for mixed chorus was written by Luigi Cherubini in 1816 and premiered 21 January 1817 at a commemoration service for Louis XVI of France on the twenty-third anniversary of his beheading during the French Revolution. In 1834 the work was prohibited by the archbishop of Paris because of its use of women’s voices, and in 1836 Cherubini wrote a second Requiem in D minor for men’s chorus.…

W Walton – Belshazzar’s Feast & J Rutter – Gloria

Belshazzar’s Feast is a cantata by the English composer William Walton. It was first performed at the Leeds Festival on 8 October 1931, with the baritone Dennis Noble, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Leeds Festival Chorus, conducted by Malcolm Sargent. The work has remained one of Walton’s most celebrated compositions. Osbert Sitwell selected the text from the Bible, primarily the Book of Daniel, and Psalm 137. Conducted by Richard Cock. The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. The opera’s official premiere was at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City on 31 December 1879. Its London debut was on 3 April 1880, at the Opera Comique. Pirates was the fifth Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration and introduced the much-parodied “Major-General’s Song“. Fiction and plays about pirates were ubiquitous in the 19th century.
